BIG, bustling and brash, Portichuelo is about as good as it gets in Huelva. In the heart of the old centre, next to the theatre, this 12-year-old family business may well be one of the better tourist spots in a city, not renowned for its architecture or sights.

This is a multi-layered operation from its tapas bar at the entrance, to its chic, modern comedor in the interior and to the busy restaurant in the square outside. It takes itself seriously and has a good local reputation. Get a table in the square overlooking the theatre and ensure to book, at least on a Sunday, when the place is heaving.
